Spring

Once again the weather is warming. There is renewal in the air. So many things are associated with the spring. Mother's Day, Father's Day, Easter, Graduation, and of course June weddings. In this issue, we also have some great gift and decorating ideas to help you push away winters chill and bring forth the fresh air of spring.

Spring Cleaning
This is the time of year to open the windows and air out the dinginess of winter. No one likes to clean, but once done isn't it wonderful to sit back, have a cup of tea in a sparkling home?

One of the things I pay more attention to these days is the products I use to clean with. I have found that the old fashioned methods often work just as well, sometimes better, without adding harsh chemicals to the environment - or my hands. For example, vinegar and water with newspaper really does clean windows leaving no streaks. Lemon and water cuts grease as well as harsh cleaners do (it will bleach slightly, so use a white cloth or rag). I like to use it in the kitchen and bathrooms. Lastly, plain old soap and water still works wonders. I can always find other things to do other than clean, so I tend to look for short-cuts or easier ways to do things. For example, for years I have cleaned my kitchen floors by mixing up a batch of soap and water and spreading it lightly around the floor - don't make a flood, just make sure it is wet all over. Wait about 15 minutes (an excuse to do something else) and them mop it up. The soaking time lifts the dirt.

Decorating
In our fall issue, we created richly colored floral arrangements and added gold, rusts, and deep greens to our house. Now is the time to swap those colors out with fresh, icy pastels.

If you have a heirloom crystal vase, fill it with baby's breath, tulips, daffodils and iris for contrast. If you are lucky enough to have a bulb cutting garden, bring these in from outside. Otherwise, at least once during the season, pick up a bunch from the florist. For in between, fill the vase with silk flowers. Place the vase on your dining room table on a crisp white linen table square with lace edging. Place the square on the table at a diagonal so the wood shows through. Flank each side with tall white pillars on silver holders.

Throughout your house, replace all the silk flowers with spring flowers. Add a few spring colored pillows to the couch and chairs. Replace the pillow shams on the bed with bright white ones with yellow flowers.

Entertaining
Try having a spring brunch for your friends. A leisurely Sunday brunch is a great way to entertain. Serve bowls of fruits as you're appetizer. For the main dish, try the following egg recipe. It can be made a day ahead and popped into the oven for 15-20 minutes to cook. Heat the English muffins in the same oven for the same amount of time. Make a couple of your favorite do-ahead deserts to serve after the meal. Of course, have plenty of coffee, tea, juices and champagne on hand.

Kandi's Swiss Baked Eggs
1 Dozen Eggs 1 Pound Shredded Swiss Cheese
2 Cups Light Cream 1 tsp Paprika (preferably Hungarian)
Salt & Pepper to taste 6 English Muffins, split
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees. Use part of the butter to generously grease the bottom of two large glass baking pans (9x13). Place 1/4 of the cheese in the bottom of each dish. Carefully break 6 eggs evenly spaced in the dish. Cover the eggs with 1/2 of the remaining cheese. Slowly pour 1 cup of cream over each of the dishes taking care not to disturb the cheese. Dot lightly with butter. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until the egg whites are fluffy and set, but the yokes are still slightly soft. While eggs are cooking toast the muffins (you may toast these in the oven as the eggs cook. To serve, place a muffin half on a plate, top with an egg and the surrounding whites. If desired, sprinkle with the paprika. Makes 10-12 large servings.
Gift Idea
Racking your brain for a unusual gift for a bride and groom? Of course the couple usually have a registry at a store, but for something extra special, take a large basket. Line it with tissue paper. Place heart shaped soaps, lotions, bubble bath, a couple of towels, monogrammed would be nice, and a couple of candles all in the couples colors into the basket. Sprinkle some dried rose petals over the items. Write a note to the couple if you wish telling them to enjoy a romantic bath together with the items from the basket. Wrap the basket in shrink wrap. Add a big bow. This is a gift the couple will remember.
Gardening
It never ceases to amaze me that from a tiny seed one can grow dinner! If you only have a small amount of time and/or space, plant a few food seeds this season. Plant something simple like carrots or radishes. They never disappoint you by not sprouting and both do well in containers. Of course, if the container is too shallow, you'll have short fat carrots, but they will still taste wonderful. Try harvesting them early for those gourmet miniature carrots. Many types of lettuce are easy to grow as well, and of course there is always the popular pot full of cherry tomatoes.

If the last time you grew food was the beans in a jar for science class in third grade, give it a try. You might even try growing the beans in the ground this time. They really do taste great off the vine.
